The Passing of a Servant: Bruce Shelley

Last Saturday, a professor of over 50 years from Denver Seminary named Bruce Shelley, passed away. My own church history professor, Dr. Scott Wenig, has written a warm reflection on this faithful servant of God.

Fall in love

I (Carrie) came across this beautiful quote today and wanted to share it with our friends and family:

"Nothing is more practical than finding God, than falling in love in a quite absolute, final way. What you are in love with, what seizes your imagination, will affect everything else. It will decide what will get you out of bed in the morning, what you will do with your evening, how you spend your weekend, what you read, whom you know, what breaks your heart, and what amazes you with joy and gratitude. Fall in love, stay in love, and it will decide everything."

Cover Letter Opening Paragraph

So, this repeated process of sending our resumes and cover letters has led me to rethink how I ought to begin my introductory paragraph to my cover letter. What do you think?

The Apostle Paul in 2 Corinthians 11:23 ventured to say he was “out of his mind” to give a laundry list of reasons why his apostleship was valid and that the “super-apostles” of Corinth were mere impostors. In many ways, I think resumes and cover letters end up being a demonstration of similar foolishness. On one hand, a resume attempts to vaunt oneself forward as a stand-out candidate above all the others. On the other, however, it is human pride to think accomplishments, degrees, and experience are anything but examples of God’s abundant grace. To lay hold to these moments of grace as any sort of pedigree worthy of hire is ignorance par excellence. Apart from Christ, I am a condemned sinner with nothing to offer a congregation. Apart from Christ, I have been a liar, manipulator, thief, blasphemer, etc. etc. Like Paul, I see myself as the chief of sinners, desperately in need of God’s moment-to-moment grace. And yet, like Paul I know by God’s calling on my life, confirmed by the Spirit and other believers, that He has gifted me and prepared me to be a local church pastor.

Jesus loves Samuel

Samuel has converted this box to a vehicle, powered by, according to him, the fuel of "Daddy push you." Here is Caleb after a meal of carrots and oatmeal. Yum!

The video was taken a few days ago. We really did not mean to catch Samuel "in the act" but it just happened that way. His pause in the middle of the recital is just that. If you wonder when it happens, you can hear mommy cracking up in the background.

Lies, idols, idolatry and death - II Chronicles 31:1 Sermon

I preached a sermon yesterday that was both personally convicting and challenging. It's from II Chronicles 31:1 and it's all about the lies we believe and the idols we worship. I apologize in advance for the coughing and throat nastiness that accompanies the audio; I was preaching at 80% capacity yesterday :)

It's available from my church's website at this link:

Title: "Delighting in the Death of Idols" - II Chronicles 31:1

Happy 6 months, Caleb!!

So the first segment could easily be called "Monkey See, Monkey Do." You can't see it very well in the video, but Samuel is pulling up his shirt, covering up with the blanket for privacy, and "feeding" the Cat in the Hat. Then, he is sharing as many of the 10 Commandments as we have learned so far. Finally, we say happy birthday to our baby boy - 6 months yesterday!! At the doctor, we learned he is in the 50th percentile for height and head circumference and the 70th for weight. He weighed in at a whopping 18 pounds 4 ounces yesterday. We are thanking the Lord for a beautiful, healthy little boy!
